Sydney 27 Nov 1844

My dear Sir

I was favored on the 17th Inst with your letter of the 7th (which arrived while I was out of town) in reply to my enquiries as to your recollection of certain transactions in the year 1840 between Mr Hamilton Mr Davidson Mr P Leslie & myself; in which [you?] acted with Mr. Jones as Mr Davidson's agent –

Your reply seems to have reference to the specific sum of £4000 – but I wished to obtain your opinion as to the effect of Mr Davidson's guarantee in binding him to pay his nephew Mr P Leslies drafts for the amount accruing from advances bona fide made by me for the conduct & management of his Estate of Colleroi under his said nephew –

Referring to the conversation I had the pleasure to hold with you this morning, on these subjects; I beg that you will, when convenient look in at my Counting house, where I will exhibit to you my books for the years 1838 to 1839 when I came under the large advances to Mr Davidson's property in charge of Mr P Leslie.

James Macarthur
