of common report that Bills to a large amount drawn by Mr. Leslie upon Mr. Davidson in your favour had been dishonoured.

After mature consideration of the circumstances of the case – so far as they have come within my Knowledge – and of the terms of the extract which you have transmitted me from Mr. Davidson's letter of the 30th September 1839, I can perceive nothing in any way to bind Mr. Davidson to pay the Bills for £4000 which you received from Mr. Leslie in July 1840. Nor does the extract appear to me to do more than guarantee the payment of such Balance as should be found due to Mr. Leslie after examination by Mr. Davidson, & final settlement (by arbitration if necessary) of the Accounts between them from the time of Mr. Leslie's taking charge of Mr. Davidson's property st Collaroy in the year 1837 to the date of its' transfer in 1840 to Messrs. Clive & Hamilton. Believe me, My dear Sir
Yours truly
Jas. Macarthur.
