Dear Sirs -

We communicated through Mr Davidson last month our intention of writing to you by this mail.

We have been sadly disappointed at finding our resources so crippled by non payment of [indecipherable] losses of crops & bad seasons, & that it has been quite out of our power to make any remittance to provide for the £3500 you so kindly advanced us when leaving England. At the time of obtaining this advance we saw no reason to doubt that the Income from this Estate would enable us to return you the money by the end of 1865; and should you wish us to do so, we will take steps to obtain it by loan elsewhere; but we should greatly prefer the continuance of our obligation to
