During the Military occupation I am devoting my attention principally to keeping things going and controlling Natives, who are an ever-present danger.   In one or two districts advantage was taken of the absence of Planters and Arms and Ammunition which had been collected, to cause some trouble, but expeditions of Armed Constabulary were at once sent out and quiet restored, but not without some of the offenders being shot, which has taught all a useful and much needed lesson.

By the Berrima", leaving to-day, my P.M.O., Lieut. Col. Howse, V.C., is returning to Australia and will be available for other work.   He is too big a man for the work now to be done here, but the services rendered by him in attending to the wounded, organizing the Hospitals on shore, and also sanitation of the towns, has been of great value, and, although I am sorry to part with him, his services can be used to greater advantage elsewhere in the Empire.

Some German Officials are also being deported, but this will form the subject of a separate communication to the Military Authorities.

I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your obedient servant,

(Sgd.) WILLIAM  HOLMES, Colonel.
ADMINISTRATOR.
