villages.   Beyond this latter village the road has been cut but not formed, as far as Bulias - 8 miles from Lorengou.   There is a ford across the Tingou River at that village.   Another road about 3 miles long leads to Ossen and thence to Killieur Haven. The clearing and road making has been done by natives under the supervision of a German.   The natives are forced to come from the different tribes for a period of one month, and are given one stick of tobacco weekly.   They supply their own food.

The Native Police (40 in number) are well trained, and are similarly armed to those at Rabaul and other places.   Near Lorengou there are two Mission Stations.   On the South Coast of Manus the ground is not suitable for plantations, being too swampy near the coast and rising too rapidly to hilly ground inland.   There are several fresh water creeks on the Island.   Rain falls every week throughout the year.   Pidgeons and Crocodiles abound.
