My dear James, 

Allow me, in the first place to offer your dear Mother, yourself, and all the other branches of your united family, my sincere and heartfelt condolence and sympathy upon the late occasion, when it pleased God in his mercy and own good time, to remove your poor dear Father from this World of suffering and woe, to another & a better, where, we are permitted to hope, his many virtues will not be overlooked – It is highly gratifying to me, as one of your oldest & most attached friends, to learn that you have all brought yourselves to view this bereavement in so just a view, and that your excellent Mother's
