Victoria Barracks,
Paddington,
1st February 1915.

The Chief of the General Staff,
Department of Defence,
Melbourne:

With reference to your communication of the 15th December:  Owing to the extraordinary composition, and the entirely novel circumstances under which the Expedition was employed, I found it necessary to have  a Warrant Officer on my own Head Quarters Staff, and accordingly appointed Staff Sgt. Major Wilkinson a Warrant Officer on the Brigade Staff, and Staff Sgt. Major Inglis a Warrant Officer a Regimental Sergt Major of the 1st Infantry Battalion, and request that my action be confirmed.

Colonel.  [Holmes]
Commanding Aust. N.& M. Exped. Force
