[Letterhead - LA Parliament  N.S.Wales.]

Tudor House - Drummoyne - Sep 16/14
Brigadier General Holmes
Dear Mr Holmes
I have received your letter of 31st ultimo - I was indeed very glad to hear from you, we anxiously look every morning & every paper for every scrap of news, - We were indeed sorry to learn of the deaths of some of your command & hope you will have no more - you could not have received the letter I wrote & folded into the parcel I sent.  What happen at the Board meeting the Day you left - complaint was made that the heads of the departments did not join the Board members in the send off & as the ship Berrima was still in the harbour & was said not to be leaving before night.
I was asked to get some token for you, & for the 3 lads viz your son Basil Mr Milner['s] son & my son Leslie - so I got the case of Pipes for you & the Match Boxes for the 3 lads all alike - when I went to deliver them I found you had gone & not to be bested, I went & found Senator Millen & he took the Parcel & Promised to deliver it in some way - it was just a chance & I was therefore glad to hear from you --

We have received several letters from Leslie he seems to be well he told us he had left the clerical work in Quarter Masters office as he was most anxious to fit himself for any position as a soldier - he is inclined to take risks & put up with considerable

[Holmes was Secretary of the Metropolitan Board of Water Supply and Sewerage]
