retreat a couple of miles. During the morning we landed three batteries and are now able to hold our own. Their Shrapnel is not so bad today as yesterday.
One Battalion had only two officers and 1 wounded left alive after the attack yesterday. Three o'clock we made a forward attack on their trenches. Their snipers very busy picking off our chaps when they get the chance. We have now heavily entrenched ourselves so that we will have a safe place if we have to retreat. Lieut Dickson first officer hit on our side. Shot through stomach, in a bad way. Since the time we landed the battle has not slackened, bullets whizzing about our ears all the time.
