them. Two big ships hit just off the bows of one of the transports. Sent cloud of water about a hundred feet heigh.

Bombardment still going on with great heat, very little reply from the shore.

Got all our pontoons safely off. Started to go along the left hand side to land in the rear. Went about 9 miles and then stopped. Battleships still bombarding the trenches here. From one boat a large baloon was floating, taking observations and telephoning it down to ship below.

Shrapnel bursting all over the place on shore. Gives a headache the continued noise of the bombarding, fierce battle going on on shore all the afternoon. We drew right in next to the shore.
