make numerous attempts but were repulsed with heavy losses each time, the Tommies capturing 400 prisoners, after fighting had waged some time the French artillery got them on the run and played terrible havoc amongst them. Gun Boats also did some firing. During the afternoon things were quiet and at 11.30pm our artillery opened up with heavy bombardment all along our firing line, which was a leader for a general advance. 12pm we charged capturing 2 lines of tenches, we suffered pretty heavily on one part but we are still holding on and it will take a lot to put us out. Fighting continued right throughout the night.
