31 DIMANCHE. [Sunday]
We had marched in at 3am to Villers Brettoneux, a small town about 9 miles east of Amiens. Our sector was fairly quiet but the one of our battalions which had gone in a little earlier on the right of us (34th 33rd) attacked the enemy successfully aided by the 34th B[attalion] recaptured a good deal of ground. However they suffered severely from machine gun fire & our bearers worked hard for 12 hours. However we did not have many casualties & one of our cars was brought up further so we four had a comparative easy time & found time to explore a warehouse full of champagne, liqueur, champagne wine & tinned meat & vegetables which considerably added to our scanty rations. The rap [regimental aid post] was first in the front room of a house but later we moved it to a cellar of a large bonnetrie where it was reasonably safe. We 4 were relieved at 4pm & ret'd [returned] to Gentelles.
