daily by old women & children. There are few men in the village.
OCTOBRE [October]
11 VENDREDI. [Friday]
8 of us, (later reduced to 5) hired a room in the house of an old French girl who was not hospitable at first, but friendly later when received bacon, cheese etc we did not want. Rent 10 frs a week.
Here we had almost the comforts of home, with table, chairs, fire kerosene lamp, & desirable out-look on small lawn. Nice & private, but brick floor cold.
12 SAMEDI. [Saturday]
Here we have all meals, write letters during day, play bridge, cribbage etc in evenings, have supper of our own cooking before retiring to "our rooms" at the château to sleep. Of course we have to "acquire" coal, wood, kerosene, fat, flour etc. Our cooking includes apple & meat pies, pancakes, scones fried bread, toast, cocoa etc. We buy fresh milk daily. We do our own housework & have the room to ourselves.
