15th Mar I should have returned to France but had a late rising instead & paraded sick at HQ & managed to get another day's leave.
15 VENDREDI. [Friday]
Walked up Victoria Street to Westminster. Went through quickly & then up Whitehall to Prime Ministers homely office No 10 Downing St. then to Trafalgar & Leicester Squares round all the theatres to Covent Garden.
I had lunch at the Eagle Hut (USA YMCA) then took tube to Mde.[Madame] Tussauds Waxworks & spent the afternoon among the models. Returned to the city for tea & went to Chu Chin Chow at His Majestys & returned to AIF Club.
16 SAMEDI. [Saturday]
Returning from Leave
Caught 8am train from Victoria Station, arriving at Dover about 11 am. We were marched up to one of the big barracks on the hill, & lodged here till next day. The afternoon & evening we were able to spend in Dover & climbing the chalk cliffs beside the town. These are very high & fortified. The harbour is mainly naval. The town is very quaint with small houses & shops & narrow winding streets & tramways.
