but cold & performed with none but port & starboard lights. My parcel of little gifts packed for Aussy was stolen.
MARS [March]
9 SAMEDI. [Saturday]
Arrived at Ardrossan at 4.30 am, and an hours train run brought us to the Central Station, Glasgow. Having had no sleep I went to the fine big Central Hotel on the Station. Then slept till 2pm, bathed & had a late luncheon.
For the remainder of the afternoon I walked round the city. Then went to the large YMCA for tea, did some writing & slept there. I secured a book on the history of the clans. Glasgow is a big city of very fine bldgs well laid out on a number of hills. It impressed me as much like Sydney. The tram service is very complete & cheap. The underground is old fashioned!
10 DIMANCHE. [Sunday]
With a party from the YMCA we went by tram through the town of Dumbarton with its historic hill & castle by the Clyde, up the vale of Leven to the village of Balloch, the distance being about 14 miles, From Balloch we took a steam launch up the lake for about 8 miles & were then in the Highlands.
The Loch seen in an off season was not over attractive with its brown water & barren brown enclosing hills. Ben Lomond standing at the head of the Loch. Returned to town & slept at Cal[edonian] Temperance Hotel
