27 MARDI. [Tuesday]
Played bridge all day & did cooking. Showery weather.
Enemy still retiring towards Peronne. The scenery around Bray & other villages on the Somme is rather pretty with plenty of foliage showing up the red roofs. The church roof in Bray was painted with the Geneva cross as large as possible.
The village was not altogether ruined.
The people of Eng are said to be elated 100,000 prisoners have been taken since July 6 1918.
28 MERCREDI. [Wednesday]
After breakfast marched 1 mile & joined 40th Batt. Then Had dinner & marched with them through Susanne carrying rations & stretchers & light gear nearly 3 miles & had spell & tea in old British Nissen huts in shallow valley. Wrote these notes for 3 days as everything is so confused one could not remember all for long. Occupied an old dugout & slept there, only one squad having a carry back to Susanne. Shells falling around. Another battalion of 10th Bge advanced about 2000 yards.
