when we got off & marched to a place called Derningcourt [Dernancourt].   Its true we stayed here only one night but that night it was so cold & frosty we hardly slept & I was not sorry to light the fire & start cooking Breakfast. My feet were wet & I can safely say that during the next three weeks they were hardly dry except at night when I had them my boots off. We left Dernancourt  Oct 21st  & arrived at Mametz Wood after a rough journey through mud and slush, shell holes etc. We started to make a stew under  trying conditions, it was still raining & the boys were very hungry. The ate the stew before it was cooked properly & then a 12 inch Howitzer went off only a few yards away & nearly scared us to death. We slept the best we could in a
