Band swung along playing the Marseillase [Marseillaise]. All the windows opened & heads of women & men popped out cheering & waving their handkerchiefs. It sounded well & they cheered our men who looked fine in their Aussy uniforms & Hats & sunburned faces, as soon as they entered the station yard the gates were closed & the people still stayed there for some time afterwards, About midnight we entrained, our party were in cattle trucks which were better than the carriages as one could get a lay down to sleep.
