knives on the blacksmiths stone & had several good walks along the lanes which we enjoyed very much. The French folks think a lot of their religion their churchs were always very nice indeed, & many of our men went to the services held in them. We left Morbecque on July 8th at 9 a.m. Before we left I met a chum from New Zealand who was in Hospital & we had a good yarn. We marched to Estaires 16 kilos & we all felt it very much, during the March we passed through a small town of Merville on the River Lys, Estaires seemed a compacted little place & some fine shops, a good Y.M.C.A. in the Town Hall where we slept the sleep of the Just. Next day the Battalions left in small parties
