We were all called Johnys by them & their quaint customs & ways were very interesting to us. The British tommies are also near us so we always manage to enjoy ourselves with concerts & etc. Fresh water was hard to get as it had to be brought up the canal from Suez 38 miles away in Barges, but the Fresh water canal was close by but not good for drinking but good for washing clothes in & etc. About this time large resevoirs reservoirs were being built so the water sulply for the future seemed good but we were not to stay on our own side of the canal for long as the water was going to be pumped ten miles out into the desert where the canal defences were being built.
