shells burst about two hundred yards away & then began to think we were not in such a safe place after all but when we saw the old French woman still go ahead with her work it restored confidence & at the same time greater admiration for them. A firework display could be seen every night if one looked toward the lines where the star shells we continually going up. Armentieres was only a mile or so away & we could see its ruined church which was only a week previously destroyed. On July 11 th we left Erquinghem for Fort Rompu only a short distance away & took over from another Field Ambulance. This was the dressing station in a Brewery much to our satisfaction. Beer all day
