A splendid orchestra was playing on an artistically decorated raised balcony at the far end of the room.The following morning I went looking for some English people whose address had been given me, but I found they had moved to Naples, so I kept along the river into the fine public gardens.During the afternoon I packed up my scanty belongings and left for Rome (316 kiloms) arriving in Italy's capital, the Eternal City, at 1 a.m. After trying a couple of hotels both of which were full, an Italian officer finally guided me to the Britannia in via Quatro Fontane.
