where they could have succeeded but of course I kept quiet & did not say a word. I don't want you to say much about it to anyone, but I fell in-love with Claire, the daughter, a jolly, always merry, beautiful girl & we spent some pleasant hours together. She can speak English a little & I was teaching her for awhile. She is a high-class sort of girl & gave me her photo with some writing on the back.
I asked her to come to the Opera with me & she said to my surprise "It is not good". So I asked a Belgian Officer to explain to me why & he said it is the custom in high class families in Brussells not to go out anywhere with a boy without a chaperone.
Another young lady asked Claire to bring me to her place next
