New Zealand  Australian Expeditionary Forces

Date 9 March 1918

Troopship Ormonde

Dear Herbert & Jess

We are at present on our way to Fremantle & are at present 2 days out from Melbourne.  We left Melbourne Thusday at midday after stopping there 3 days but we were not given much leave only about 1 day.  While in Melbourne I visited  Mrs Ludlow with a lady friend.  Rita Nicholson, that girl I used to write to.  She made us welcome & we had supper there & left at 10 pm because I had to be back on the transport at 10.30.  I am  Mess orderly on the Boat, that is I serve out all the tucker & carve the joint for 30 men only. All the fellows put 6d each in a week so that I am on a good wicket.
