Somewhere in France
12.10.18
Dear Herbert & Jess,
We are billeted in a French village after being in the line for 4 days. I wrote Ma & Pa a letter about my experiences in the line & meant that letter for all of you. It is an experience I shall never forget & I can tell you I am jolly thankful to be here today. I never realised that it was anything like it was. The Barrage we advanced under was admitted by captured Germans to be one of the most terrible barrages they have experienced. I never could stand the sight of a dead man but after seeing the thousands of dead Germans lying on the battlefield & rolling them over for souvenirs they have no fear for me. I got a German Belt & Disc & postcards & that is all I could get as somebody had ratted them before. The part of the Hindenberg line we attacked was easier to break than they thought
