mountain, some cattle were found killed and

I think Johnstons did a foolish thing = they gave

information to the Police & they sent and got a

Black tracker = he tracked the Black to his

camp and when he was asleep - sprang on him

put the handcuffs on - then straped him onto

a horse and brought him to Wingham = there

ws onlly one house or two in Wingham besides the

Court House, hte Pub and a store or two then,

The Magistrates could do nothing = there was no

proof that he had killed any cattle, so they had

to dismiss the case = From apearance the   man

was evidently mad = he would say nothing but

understood English quite well = When they let

him go they gav e him a blanket, as soon as he

was outside he took a look round, as if geting

the lay of the Country (I forgot to say it was dark

when they brought him to Wingham and put him

in the Lockup) threw the blanket on the ground

and made streight off for the Peak, I do not

think he was ever seen again = but his fire was

to be seen some years after = but never now.

I was once with Robert Johnston and Ed Donkin

and we were talking about this Black = Donkin

said he remembered a bout a White Woman being

Killed about Cooley Camp (Woodville) on the Hunter
