out the horse = The man who inployed [employed]him sent the

Constable (Old Tippin) after him = He traced him to the

Flat, to the Blacks camp there = as soon as he came Paddy got

the horse and saddle and then Tippin took him in charge

and Paddy got three months, I think it was a shame, as he

had no intention of stealing the horse - only he was homesick

he learned to play draughts and did not mind it much

only he did not like having no tobacco that was the worst

thing about it, Paddy once found a £1 note on the Bighill

Road and Mrs  Joseph Andrews very foolishly gave him

its value in Rum,(it was only 2/6 a bottle then) and

before that the Blackfellows had very little idea of the

value of money, but after that they wanted a £1 note for

any big job they undertook = Paddy felled about 29 acres

for us for £2 and used to go out spliting[splitting]  with me = He

was a good fellow if he was a Black fellow. Peter I never

cared much about = he would work very well sometimes Mrs  Josh

Andrews used to get him for a washerman sometimes. She said

he was not bad, his native name was Tooagumi - from his having

been speared in the neck =(Tooa = the neck or throat & gumi a spear,

Darby was called Towenbah = from Towen a canoe- When quite

a young man he was about the Taree estate and I suppose the

Darkies had been stealing corn or something of that sort & the

Whites were hunting them away & they made a bolt for the

River and Darby jumped into an old canoe and his legs

went through the botom[bottom] & fixed him & he got the name
