find growing in the water holes - tasteles stuf - The roots of
a small fern (Whawebah) and of another fern that grows
in the swamps called Bungwhall = there was not much fruit
to be got = Raspberreys (Kipuck here, Maroo down the River)
Myal Leamons the fruit of the caportree, Black apples
(Woombuck) not nice, there realy was no nice fruit.
Kipuck was the only one we ever used in tarts - but
down the River there were two of a much better discription
one = a kind of Blackberry was quite as good as Mul-
berries in a pie or tart = the other one was like a bright
red Blackberry = but not much taste, There were other
fruits eaten none of them to a Whites taste except the
"Tareebit=" and "Coonkelbit" I have not got an English
name for them = the cherries, - were used by some for jam
and the Native courant = that was very acid, The only
fruit that grew in the Bush that we made use of
was the Capegoosberry and that was an introduced
plant, by a boat builder at Mr Wynters, and by the
time we got here it was all over the River, as soon
as a Brush was felled and burned off, they came
up in thousands, it made the [finest] jam
I only wish we had plenty now The Myal Lemmon
was a peculiar flavoured fruit, if quite ripe it was
not so bad - I used to like them but you must be
carefull not to bite a seed = the seeds were very hot
The Coonklebit was much the same when ripe
