At this time the Sydney was high and dry but instructions were given to proceed with the refit with all possible speed so that if there were anything to do the Sydney would be pushed into it. The admiral had one decent cruiser with him and he made use of us.

After eight days spent in revelry and dancing with the charming American ladies by those who liked that sort of thing and on billiards at the Naval Club by the more sober of us we were ready for sea and were ordered to take station of Chesapeake bay in case the Germans brought any more ships which of course they would be likely to do - being fools - and knowing full well we now had a patrol of the place or in case the Appan came out.
