We had hurried glimpses of Carthagena and Santa Marta ports in Venezuela and made a pretence of looking for German shipping that of course everybody knew that we were really bound for a game of bridge in Grenada.
On the way to Grenada we passed by the Dutch islands of Aruba and Curocoa [Curacao] - one spells the latter this way from force of habit though the liquer is probably made in Boston. These islands or one of them one believes has lately passed into the hands of the United States.
Still the pretty red roofed European looking towns were a relief after the mud villages of the West Indian settlements. Next day we put into La Guyra [Guaira] the port of Caracas capital of Venezuela. La Guyra [Guaira] is an imposing place. There is a wide bay backed by tremendous well wooded mountains over which climbs the winding railway to Caracas three thousand feet up.
