for'ard as far away as possible from the home made infernal machine tracking aft which was more of a menace than a weapon of offence. The Sydney to protect her from torpedoes as she lay against the wharf was allotted an oil ship as a torpedo net. This craft lay alongside the Sydney on the harbour side the idea being that she would break the force of any torpedo and explode it before it could reach us. Just imagine having a torpedo explode into an oil tank alongside one!
There were some great minds
Verily we have some great minds in the Navy.
We were tied up to the wall on this occasion for eight days awaiting certain portions of machinery from England which were necessary for our refit. At last the steamer came in but a complete search revealed nothing for us and we had to make good our defects as best we might.
Recruiting was still going strong in Halifax and frenzied Sergeant Majors aided by blaring bands and excited women flapping flags made impassioned speeches in the roadway what time the eligible youth stood by and spat.
