to meet us at the heads and play us in with bands and whistles but as the naval representatives of a sister Dominion one expected the usual courtesies. At any rate one knows that if a Canadian cruiser if such a craft there were, were to come to Sydney some sort of acknowledgement would be made of her visit.
Halifax seemed a busy sort of place and the harbour was crowded with shipping. There is direct communication with N York by train and many of us wished that we might make the trip.
Halifax was busy recruiting.
From a casual inspection one gathered that there was a large party of shirkers in the place tho' we must candidly admit that their feelings were not spared by the recruiting committees.
Sky signs street notices and placards, and streamers stretched across the road all bore the same class of inscription to wit "That if you didnt enlist you were a louse".
"Will you fatten on the blood of another"
"If you do not enlist you are equally blood guilty with the unspeakable Hun"
These and other polite notices continuously flaunted
