From Kingston we left for
So we sat down against the wharf again for a week and then left to indulge in more frightfulness at a place called Starve Gut bay a hundred miles away around the other side of the island. Here we fired we eased off the guns again and ran more torpedoes and as usual had to dig some of them out of the mud.
When the Gunnery people - who by the way were always responsible for any discomfort we suffered - got tired of this we returned whence we had come.
At last the Sydney got a job. She became despatch carrier and postman in ordinary for the station. Codes were being altered and the books had to be taken to the various governors of the neighbouring possessions by a man o war.
So on the 14th June we sailed for Belize the Capital of British Honduras.
Belize & the surrounding coasts used to be the home of Yellow Fever which however has now been stamped out but it is a low lying swampy sort of place inhabited by mosquitoes, a few white officials and planters and thousands of niggers.
There is not any harbour and ships lie several miles off the town.
