In the afternoon a sports meeting was held and at night a party of us were entertained at dinner by the Governor whose piper provided the music. This Gentleman walked up and down the conservatory for an hour and a half while we fed making weird noises unto the Lord and towards the end while the wine was being passed he came in and piped or whatever the technical word is around the table.
To anyone not born North of the Tweed it seemed queer to see this great rawboned man in kilts striding round at eight miles an hour red in the face & making a dreadful din but the awe which vice royalty inspires kept us from grinning.
After dinner a few of us including the Governors daughter went to the concert our men were giving. We arrived late & the show was suspended while Gawd Save was played. It was the first time I had been played in to that ditty.
