the Azores in December of 1914.

The Sydney was good in a head sea but rolled abominably in a beam sea. For three days we played submarines the quarter deck and gun being most of the time submerged. As we made South the weather improved and before long we were once again in the glassy seas of the tropics and were rapidly shedding the warm woollens which had been so comfortable up North.

In spite of the weather we were glad to escape from the frightfulness up North and be in detailed service again and later as the seas went down to spread our awnings keep our scuttles open at night have lights on and generally lead a civilised existence.

On October 4th we arrived at Kingston Jamaica again & forthwith repaired to the Club and were received by the members as long lost brothers. The Sydney somehow continued to be a popular ship and wherever we went people seemed glad to see us. The continued kindness & hospitality of our Jamaican friends was always very much appreciated and all the Sydneys I think look back with fond regret on the days and months we spent in their delightful island with them in the course of our sojourn in the Spanish main.
