operations were very sarcastic and hassled the others with gratuitous advice.

"I wish you ruddy pill masters and pay bobs would go ashore and carry on loafing there" or "Go and help the parson sort his hymn books" were all we got for our trouble.

Still, Heaven knows how, the Sydney was finally teed up, and the shouting died away; and friend and foe, ships officer and dockyard man alike, adjourned all ruffled and sweating to the Wardroom for the usual purpose. The ship was to have a thorough overhaul and we prepared for a five weeks stay.

Bermuda in the summer time is just as hot as the West Indies and with the ship walled in by dock and the breeze shut off life on board was pretty intolerable.

The Naval Engineer's house on the hill above the Dockyard happened to be empty so we adjourned there bag and baggage and lived like civilised beings.

There was a Naval Club nearby which was rather a pot house but it had three good billiard tables which served to pass the time. So for five weeks while the dockyard mates
