to Halifax.

Our ostensible reason for going to Halifax was to have a rest but this time we found the place in an uproar and enough frightfulness about to cheer the heart of a Terpitz [German battleship]. 

The Picket boat belonging to the Leviathan had been rammed by a tug and sunk and three lives lost. On arrival the Sydney's diving party was requisitioned and proceeded in charge of two officers to help search for the bodies.

Next day we coaled. Then a body was found and there was another funeral and of course the Sydney had to go. The following day a fire broke out at some oil works on the foreshores and by request the Sydney supplied a fire and demolition party and then with nearly every officer either diving burying somebody or putting out fires we were ordered to raise steam in case the oil spread across the water.

While all this was going on an enquiry concerning our collision with the ferry was proceeding and the ward room was filled with witnesses. So we had a jolly time in
