through German Villers scene of early atrocities. The Germans burnt & sacked the village on their arrival, killed & tortured old men, women and children. Outside see traces of heavy fighting a thousand little wooden crosses peep over the rising crops, protesting to heaven, against all this terrible butchery that has been going on for last 2 years. Our destination is Fuimbois where we are billeted most atrociously. Those responsible ought to be shot. The laissez-aller [neglect ?] in some branches of the French Army is disgraceful. We have given up everything for our native land & we are treated no better than animals.
9th - Wait for train Regimentiare.
10th - Get instructions to start for trenches at 12 after soup. Route via St. Clement (Division) Fimbois (Brigade). Our head quarters Veo (?). Am told off P.C of 2nd Bon. Things look remarkably quiet. Within few K'metres of the front fields cultivated & villlages inhabited by civilians. Things appear wonderfully quiet. Not an odd cannon shot on way. A slight difference with mort homme.
