19 - Awaken early about 4.30 by terrific bombardment by our batteries of German lines. Boches answer, more weakly but quite enough to make us feel uneasy in our little gourbi [shack]. As usual at daylight, German aeroplanes over our lines. They were keen to see what we were about. At about 8.30 [indecipherable] take mortars [indecipherable] for artillerie is let loose but the Germans answer & we have quite an exciting time. Only 15 wounded, mirabile dictu.
20 - Awaken 5 o'clock, big new bombardment. A day of spring. Indeed the weather has been fine of late, (last 3 or 5) days. At 11 by order from the General, our men get instructions to fire for 5 minutes. Result the Boches sent us 3, 77! The Boches have had the laugh. Several German aviators about as usual and easily keep French aviators from coming up too close. Some of them are not too game. It looks more & more as
