Everything disorganised, but what a fearful thing this war is. Men in the prime of life are butchered what for? All peace loving men they were. Such situations drives one mad little by little & as for nerves!!!  The wind is in the Germans favour & the stench of the dead come over our lines. How many corpses are still between, how many still burried in the saps. Afternoon very 13th quiet & night too. During the night the boches on our left try & take barrage but are repulsed with grenades.

13th - Get our ravitaillement [supplies] at last. 1st since arrival in trenches.  Much rested, but bad attack of dysentry. Morning very quiet only small attack of grenades in front of 5th otherwise very quiet.
