We had a ready method of settling who should go to anything that was on. If it were a command from a governor to attend a show which was not expected to be enlivening volunteers were called for. If none offered the mess threw dice till the unhappy victims were secured.

Counterwise if six officers were invited to something good we cut to see who should stand out. So every thing was fixed up amicably.

We were now due for a refit. The ship had scarcely been touched inside or out since leaving Sydney in October '14 and in the meantime she had steamed many thousand miles. Her bottom was foul and as the ship slid through the water we could see the long weed trailing aft.

Bermuda was the only available dockyard for a ship of our size in those waters and we had to wait till it was free. However on June 30th we left the Indies for the North and reached Bermuda for the second time in our cruise on July 4th.
