Thursday 7 th   PM a fresh breeze from the westw d & clear wea er at 3 o'clock took several Observations of the Sun & Moon the mean result of them gives 185:36 W Long de from the Meridian of Greenwich what winds we have had this 24 hours hath been against us so that at Noon we had advanced but very little to the Westward______________________
Friday 8th Forept. of PM had a Gentle breeze at NNW with which we stood in shore & fetched close under the Cavalle Islands they are a Group of Small Isl d  lying close under the Main Land & 7 Leag s No 60Wt from Cape Brett & 31/2 lgs from Point Rodney.from these Islands the Main land trends WbN & we were here ViFited by several Canoes & the People in them seemed desirous of Trafficking with us but at this time a breeze of wind sprung up at Sth they could not keep up with the Ship & I would not wait for them, the wind did not continue Long at Sth  before it veered to SWt  & Wt  a light breeze found the Variation in the Evening to be  12.42 Et  & in the morning 13o  Et  kept standing to the WNW t & NWt10 AM at which time we tacked & stood in for the Shore being at 5 Leagues off & in this situation had 118 fams  Water, at Noon Cape Brett bore SE dist t  13 
Leag s  & the Westerm st  land in sight bore WBS being at this time about 4 Leag s from the Land Latitude in Observation 34.42 S h  
Saturday 9 th PM had a gentle breeze at Wt  which in the evening came to Sth  & continued so all night this by day light brought us pretty well in with the land 7 Leag st  to the 
Westd of the Carvalle Isles & where lies a deep Bay running in SWBW & WSW, the bottom of which we could but just see & there the land ap-peared to be low & level the  2 points which form the Entrance lie WNW& ESE 5 Miles from each other, this Bay I have named Doubtless Bay  the wind not permitting us to look into this Bay we steered for the Westermost land we had in sight & which bore from us WNW t dist t  3 Leag s but before we got the length of it it fell calm & continued so until 10 Clock whence a breeze sprung up at WNW & with it we stood off N while we lay becalmed several of the Natives came off to the Ship in 5 Canoes but were fearful of venturing alongside & after these were gone 6 more Canoes came off these last came boldly alongside [indecph sold us?] fish of different sorts sufficient to give all hands a little  at Noon the Cavalle Isles   bore SEBE distant 8 Leag s & the Entrance of Doubtless Bay SBW dist t 3 Leag & the NW t Extremity of the Land in sight which we judge to be the Main bore NWBW t , our Lat de  by
