                                NEW ZEALAND

October  1769  [left margin note]
Cloathed with woods and Verdue & to all appearance well inhabited, especially in the Vallies[sic] leading up from the Bay where we daily saw Smokes at a great distance inland & far back in the Country are very high Mountains. At Noon the SW.t Point of Poverty Bay which I have named Young Nickshead after the Boy who first saw this land
bore NbW.t dist.n 3 or 4 Lg's being at this time about 3 Miles from the Shore & had 25 fa.m Water, the Main Land extending from NEbN to S.o my intention is to follow the direction of the Coast to the Southw.d as far as the Lat.de of 40º or 41º & then to return to the Northward in case we meet with nothing to encourage us to proceed farther ~
Thursday 12.th [left margin note]
Gentle breezes at NW.t & N.º with frequent Calms. in the Afternoon while we lay becalm'd[sic] several Canoes came off to the Ship but kept at a distance until one who appeared to come from a Diff.t part came off & past alongside at once & after her all the rest, the people in this boat had heard of the Treatment those had meet with we had, had onboard before & therefore came onboard without hesitation, they were all kindly treated & very soon entered into a Traffick[sic] with our People for Georges Island Cloth &tc.giving in Exchange their Paddles. having little else to dispose of & hardly left themselves a sufficient Number to paddle ashore, nay the People in one Canoe after disposing of their Paddles offerd to sell the Canoe, after a stay of about 2 hours they went away but by some means or others 3 were left onboard & not one boat would put back to take them in & what was more surprising those aboard did not seem at all uneasy with their situation, in the evening a light breeze springing up at NW we steerd along shore under an easy sail until midnight then brot.[brought] too soon after it fell Calm & continued so until 8 o'Clock AM when a breeze sprung up at N.º with which we stood alongshore SSW. at & after sunrise found the Variation to be 14º 46'E.t about this time 2 Canoes came off to the Ship one of which was prevaild upon to come along side to take in the 3 People we had had onboard all night who now seem'd glad of the opportunity to get ashore, as the People in the Canoe where a little shy at first, it was observed that one Argument those onboard made use on intice[sic] the others alongside, was in telling them that we did not Eat men, from which it should seem that these People have such a Custom among them ~

Cape Table [left margin note]
At the time we made sail we were abreast of the Point of Land set yesterday at Noon from which the Land trends SSW, this point I have named Cape Table on account of its shape & figure it lies 7 Lg's to the Southward of Poverty Bay in the Lat.de 39.7 S.º Long.de 181º:36' it is of a mod.te height makes in a sharpe Angle & appears to be quite flat at Top, In steering alongshore to the Southward of the Cape at the distance of 2 or 3 Miles off, our soundings were from 20 to 30 fa.om having a Chain of Rocks that appears at diff.t heights above water laying between us & the Shore at Noon Cape Table bore N.º20 E.t dist.ce 4 Lg's & a small Island (being the Southermost land in sight) bore S.º70 W.t distant 3 Miles this
