Remarkable occurrences at Sea __________

1769 July Saturday 15th Light aatirs & Variable between thNo & WSW  clear wear at 6pm York Island bore SE & Huaheine WNW & at 7 am it bore west Latde observed at Noon 16:50 So Royal Bay So 37:30E distant 22 Leagues _____
Sunday 16th Winds at S&SSE a gentle breeze with some few showers of rain at 6pm the Island of Huahine W1/2S dist. 7 or 8 Leagues at 2am being close in with the NW part of the Island sounded but had no ground with 20 fam , Some of the Natives came off to the Ship but they were very shy of coming near until they discover'd Tupia but after that they came onboard witht hesitation among those who came onboard was the King of the Island whose name is Oree he had not been long onbd before he & I exchanged Names & we afterwards addressed each other accordingly. 
        At noon the North end of the Island bore [SbE1/2 indecipherable] Latde observ'd 16:40S. Three other islands in sight/[indecipherable]/Ulitea, Otaha, & Bolabola so called by three Natives___
Monday 17th Winds Southerly fine pleasant wean at 3 pm Anchor'd in a small Harbour on the West side of the Island/ called by the Natives Owharhe/ in 18 faom water clear ground & secure from all winds soon after I went onshore accompanied by Mr Banks Dr Solander & Dr Monkhouse Tupia, the King of the Island& some others of the Natives, who had been on board since the morniing the moment we landed Tupia striped himself as low as his waist & desir'd Mr Monkhouse to do the same he then sat down before a great number of Natives that were collected together in a large Shed or House, the rest of us by his own desire dtanding behind, he then begun a long speech or prayer which lasted near a quarter of an Hour & in the Course of the Speech presented to the people two handkerchiefs a black with Neckcloth, some beads & two very small bunches of Feathers, these things he had before provided for that purpose at the same time two Chiefs spoke on the other side in answer to Tupia as I suppose in behalf of the people & presented us with some young Plantain plants & 2 small bunches of feathers, these were by Tupia order'd to be carried onboard the Ship, after the Peace was thus concluded & ratified every one was at liberty to go where he pleased & the first thing Tupia did was to go & pay his Stations at one of the [Mories?], this seem'd to be a common Ceremony with this people & I suppose always perform'd upon landing on each others Teritories in a peaceable manner, it further appear'd that the things which Tupia gave away was for the God of this people as they gave us a Hog & some Coconuts for our God & thus they have certainly drawn us in, to commit sacriledge for the Hog hath already received sentence of Death & is to be dissected to morrow ___________
