out in the Brown line. Some Americans were seen east of the HINDENBERG Line but mopping up had been neglected so these troops were isolated.
10.30 am Reconnaisance revealed that the 10th and 11th Bdes were not advancing to plan so the Bde was ordered to take cover in Squares F.17 and 18 pending a change in the situation. The Bde was subjected to heavy enemy M.G.fire and Shell fire. Units were disposed as follows :- 33rd Bn and 9th A.L.T.M. Bty in F.17 b, 34th Bn F18 a, 35th Bn in F.18 c, M.G.Coys, Field Co and Bearer Div. in F.16. Reconnaissance revealed that the enemy was holding the whole of the HINDENBERG Line opposite the 27th American Div. as well as portions of the Brown line between QUENNEMONT FARM, A.20 c and the knoll A.7 b including GUILLEMONT FARM. Americans and 10th and 11th A.I.Bdes were also in portions of the Brown line. Troops seriously congested in the area.
12.30 pm Major W.A. LE ROY FRY, Commanding 34th Bn was reported wounded and Maj. F.G.Grant commenced command.
2.30 pm Verbal orders received that the 10th and 11th A.I.Bdes were to attack immediately and mop up the area from Brown line to Green line followed by the 9th A.I.Bde. Frontages were at once allotted to Bns and all Units were notified by 3.30 pm. The attack of the 10th and 11th A.I.Bdes however was not successful owing to heavy opposition by enemy M.G's, and the inability to use our artillery to cover the advance.The only unit of the Bde which moved was the 34th Bn who occupied trench systems in F.12 a.
