The result of this retirement was to leave the left flank of the Bde entirely "in the air". The English troops became very demoralised and disorganised during the progres of the counter-attack. The Bde threw back a defensive flank and supporting Coy of 34th Bn were ordered forward to prolong this flank. The Mortars assisted materially on this flank. Undoubtedly the stand of the Bde s aved a most critical situation. Using the Bde as a pivot a counter attack was launched late in the evening and the situation restored. Bde captures were 16 Off and 409 O/Rs.

During the afternoon verbal instructions were received from 3rd Aust Div for the Bde to undertake an operation involving the capture of BRAY-sur-SOMME with subsequent exploitation. Later the G.O.C. in Conference with the Divisional Commander decided in would be impossible to rush BRAY without a barrage during daylight.

1 pm Operation cancelled. 10th A.I. Bde were ordered to relieve the 9th A.I.Bde and attack BRAY.

1 am 10th A.I.Bde attacked BRAY, which was brilliantly captured and the success exploited.
4 am 9th A.I. Bde relieved by 10th A.I.Bde. Bde Headquarters moved to SAILLY-le-SEC (J.29.c.4.7.)

8 pm 9th A.I.Bde ordered to move to Reserve position as follows :- B.H.Qrs K.32.b.5.2. 33rd Bn - Square K.22; 34th Bn Square K.17; 35th Bn - Square K.23.

2-30 am Attack of 10th and 11th A.I.Bdes commenced.
6 am All Battalions complete in new locations. Enemy appeared to be in process of retiring towards SUZANNE. The Division endeavouring to keep contact during retirement.
2 pm The Brigade moved forward to Valley North of SUZANNE, halting until dusk before crossing SUZANNE RIDGE, and moving into bivouac in Valley. The Brigade in Divisional Reserve.
