[Harry Hawkins diary 10 July 1915 – 12 July 1918, transcribed by a member of his family]
[Transcriber's Note: Harry Hawkins enlisted in Sydney in the 11th Reinforcements,1st Infantry Battalion, on 14/7/1915, aged 36, a labourer. He sailed to England on the Themosceles 5/10/1915. Served on the Western Front. Wounded in action July 1916. Returned to his Battalion December 1917 but was injured in January and for this and his age he was returned to Australia and discharged 21/4/1918. His diary is a frank record of life and action on the front line including the taking of Pozieres 23 July 1916. An account of his life after his return to Australia appears in his daughter Edith's memoirs which begin on page 39]
