Bodys with red Oker & Oil from Head to foot a thing that we have not seen before. Their Canoes are large, well built & Ornamented with Carved work in general as well as most we have seen. ~
Saturday 25th PM had fresh Gs. at SW. & Squally wear. we kept stand'g along Shore to the NW, having the Main land on the one side & Islands on the other our Soundings were from 26 to 12 fam. at ½ past 7 PM we Anchor'd in a Bay in 14 fam. Sandy bottom, we had not sooner come to an Anchor than

we caught between 90 & 100 Bream / a fish so called/ this occasioned my giving this place the name of Bream Bay. the 2 points which forms this Bay N. [indec.] 5 Leags. from each other, the Bay is everywhere pretty broad & between 3 & 4 Leags. deep at the bottom of it there appears to be a fresh water River, the N. head of the Bay called Bream Head is high land & remarkable on accot. of sevl. Peaked rocks ranged in order upon the Top of it, it lies in the Latde. 35:46 S & N. 41 W. dist.17 Leags. from Cape Colvill. This Bay may likewise be known by some Small Islands lying before it called the Hen & Chickens one of which is pretty high & terminates at Top in 2 Peaks, the land between Point Rodney & Bream Head which is 10 Leags. is low & wooded in Turfs & between the Sea & the firm land are white sand banks, we saw no inhabitants but saw fires in the Night, a proof that the Country is not uninhabited. At day light AM we left this Bay & directed our Course along shore to the Northwt. having a Gentle breeze at SbW & Clear wear. a little after sun rise found the Varn. to be 12:42 Easterly at Noon our Latde. by observn. was 36º:36. S. Bream head bore S. distt. 10 Miles, some small Islands/ Poor Knights/ at NEbN dist. 3 Lgs. & the Northernmt. land in sight bore NNW, being at this Time 2 Miles from the Shore & in this Situation had 26 fam. the land here abt. is rather low & pretty well cover'd with wood & seems not ill inhabited.~
Sunday 26th. PM. Gentle breezes between the ENE. & N. kept ranging along Shore to the Northwd. at the dist. of 4 or 5 Miles off saw several Villages & some Cultivated land. Towards Evening several Canoes came off to us & some of the Natives ventur'd onb. to 2 who appear'd to be Chiefs I gave presents after these were gone out of the Ship the others became so troublesome that in order to get rid of them we were at the expense of 2 or 3 Musquet Balls & one 4 Pound Shott but as no harm was intended them none they received, unlefs they hapned to over heat themselves in pulling onshore, in the NIght had Variable light Airs, but towards morning had a light breeze [indec.] & afterwds. [indec.] E. with this we proceeded Slowly to the Northwd. at 6 AM several Canoes
