the ground. We were out of sight & secure from snipers' bullets. There was a cut earthy step so that for firing purposes we could stand up & take aim over the parapet on which our rifles with fixed bayonets rested. Two of us had two hour turns for guard duty which simply amounted to keeping a vigilant eye out for an attacking party, Sergeant (now Lieut) Sharpe and Corporal Briggs being in charge. Fritz kept his flares up all night. By this means any figures coming over the skyline can be detected. At 4 o'clock in the morning just as dawn was about to break the order was given to "stand to".
