we passed some stretcher bearers serenely carrying wounded - four men to each stretcher - as if they were on a fair field without danger of sudden death.   We passed machine gun pits where men were sitting up as if playing cards or having a snack but on closer view their ashen faces showed that they were dead while outside the actual trench there was a chain of corpses for close on a mile.   Eventually we reached our destination & proceeded to establish ourselves, having at certain points to run the gauntlet of machine gun fire.   Here we were for several hours in a choice
